Nathaniel Hawthorne(1804 – 1864) Born Nathaniel Hathorne (the author may have added the "w" to his surname, in an effort to dissociate himself from his notorious forebears). An American novelist and short story writer, best-known today for his many short stories and his romance novels "The Scarlet Letter", "The House of the Seven Gables", "The Blithedale Romance", and "The Marble Faun". As the moral gloom of the world overpowers all systematic gaiety, even so was their home of wild mirth made desolate amid the sad forest. I have not lived, but only dreamed about living. Long, long may it be, ere he comes again! His hour is one of darkness, and adversity, and peril. |
